Around Emporia With Emma: ESU Lady Hornets Game

January 31, 2018

On January 13th 2018 at 1:30 P.M, one of the many ESU Lady Hornets game took place at the William Allen White Auditorium. The day itself was cold and bitter, quite the opposite of perfect game day weather. Nonetheless did the game take place, and on Saturday, my family and I found ourselves walking into the William Allen White Auditorium in Emporia, Kansas.

The auditorium itself was warm and well lit, the sound of shoes screeching against the polished wooden floor. Shouting could be heard from the stadium while my mother, younger brother and I walked up two flights of ramps up to our seats. We had arrived fairly early so my mom decided to get us pizza at the concession stands. While she left my brother and me in our seats, I looked around and recognized some friendly faces. Minutes later as my mother arrived, the opposing team, the Riverhawks, ran out to practice their warm up. The other team’s jerseys were green with white bold letters reading: Northeastern State. Awhile after, the ESU Hornets came out and everyone who had gradually filled the stands started to cheer. The ESU Lady Hornets ran around the stadium once and began to warm up too on the left half of the stadium. Not long after the Hornets came out was it time for the actual game to begin.

The band began to play, their fingers flying to keep the beat. The National Anthem began and everyone focused on their attention on the Army Official holding the flag. As if in a trance, everyone in the auditorium placed their hands on their heart and looked at the flag. Like in a flash, the song was finished and the audience clapped as they sat again. My family watched as the game began, the commentator doing his job well. This went on for awhile, with the occasional cheer or boo of the crowd.

By halftime, the ESU Hornets were in the lead by a few points (I don’t know the exact score). Like any other game, they did the infamous Chicken Toss, the golf, and the Countdown Basketball shots. The band played a song or two and people went to go get refreshments. My family and I stayed in our seats, my brother messing around and me on my phone. The game was simple from then on, the scores getting close at one point. By the last quarter, the Hornets were twenty points ahead. Everyone sat on the edge of their seats, and suddenly: BUZZ! The alarm went off and the game had ended, the Lady Hornets claiming another win.

The end of the game had been brief. Each team member gave the opposing team a high five, all saying “good game” or a farewell like that. The people in the stands began to leave and my mom, brother and I departed. The game itself was fun and if you love basketball, you might think about going to an ESU game. Even if you don’t like the sport itself, it’s still fun to go with friends or family.
