Around Emporia with Emma: Ellen Plumb’s City Bookstore
February 5, 2018
Are you someone who enjoys reading books? Do you know someone that loves to read books? Well, as someone who loves to read, I find it extremely difficult to find a good, local bookstore. Luckily, Ellen Plumb’s City Bookstore in Emporia, Kansas has everything a book lover dreams of!
Ellen Plumb’s City Bookstore, located at 1122 Commercial St, in Emporia, KS, in a hometown-friendly shop. The friendly shop owner, Marsha Lawrence, has worked very hard to bring the bookstore into Emporia. The shop itself is small and friendly. Last year, due to a shop flood, the city bookstore had to move across the street. Luckily, the new location is (in my opinion) much better. It is bigger and has a more “airy” feeling. There is more room to shelve books and in a corner of the store is a cozy reading nook. If you’re looking for a simple, local bookstore, try Ellen Plumb’s, they might have something you’re looking for!
You’ve heard of the bookstore but you haven’t been introduced to the books there! Ellen Plumb’s Bookstore has several genres to choose from, varying from children’s books to self-biographies. If you’re someone who loves to read fantasy and dystopian world novels, Ellen Plumb’s certainly has a variety for you! The bookstore has books for younger readers, like books to introduce toddlers to the alphabet, writing, naming animals and objects, and much more! There are books for the older audiences too, like some of Stephen King’s novels. For the young-adult section, there are several series that you should try; like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, and several series more!
You’re probably wondering what the staff is like at Ellen Plumb’s City Bookstore. Unlike other bookstores, there aren’t any other staff other than the main manager herself. The bookstore isn’t big and doesn’t take many people to clean it up. Instead of having various employees, Marsha Lawrence manages the bookstore all by herself. Mrs. Lawrence is a kind, friendly woman who is always grateful for you purchasing a book or just stopping in! She is more than happy to help find a book and isn’t scared of getting into a good conversation on what book to read next. If that isn’t being a good manager, I don’t know what is!
Have you considered stopping by Ellen Plumb’s Bookstore? You should definitely recommend going there (or go there yourself) to someone is looking for a good book or is interested in history. Hopefully, this gave you a look at what it’s like to visit your local bookstore! If you do go down to Ellen Plumb’s, tell Marsha Lawrence that the EMS sent you!
