All Aboard The Moffat Road Railroad Museum!

The sun is high in the sky, and the sky is a bright blue. The mountains are just a hazy, deep blue-grey in all directions. Dark clouds are on the horizon. That beautiful image of Colorado happens to be the background of the Moffat Road Railroad Museum, the place I am reviewing. And I will be reviewing 3 aspects of the Museum: the route to the museum and where it’s located, what there is to do at the museum and what the experience is like, and finally, how costly and worth it is to visit the Museum. The reason why I’m reviewing the Moffat Road Railroad Museum is that I’ve been to it multiple times. I found it a very entertaining and lovely little museum. I hope you will too.

The Moffat Road Railroad Museum isn’t exactly easy to get to. You can’t just drive straight there on the main highway, I-70, from Denver. The museum is in the town of Granby. My family usually stays in Winter Park twice a year to ski in the winter and ride trains and hike in the summer. It takes about a half-hour to get to Winter Park from I-70 and it is another half-hour drive from Winter Park to Granby on a small highway. The small highway goes through a valley with lots of scrubby brush and sort of barren countryside. There’s lots of trees around Winter Park, but hardly any around Granby. The museum is on the edge of town and you can see it from the highway. Look for the baseball fields and train tracks!

After parking in the small parking lot, you go into the Visitor Center. This building used to be a wedding chapel at Disneyland and was moved all the way to Colorado. That’s a pretty remarkable thing isn’t it? There are some antiques and a souvenir shop in the Visitor Center. There’s also a model of the original Moffat Tunnel. Outside there are a bunch of train cars on display. My favorite train car on display is the 1906 caboose. It has been restored to what it would have looked like back when it was still being used and the people who worked to restore it did an astounding job. The 1913 steam derrick is jaw-dropping. The biggest building contains a permanent, Christmas-themed O scale model railway. The model railway is wondrous and has lots of little vivid details that can be found on a scavenger hunt. Make sure you have plenty of time to do the scavenger hunt and good luck finding Waldo!

The good news is that parking is free. Admission for adults is $7, kids 5 to 16 is $5, kids under 5 are free, and seniors and military are only $5. So it’s pretty inexpensive, especially considering all the things you get to do for the low price. My family usually spends about an hour enjoying the attractions. It all depends on how much time you have. Take your time exploring the train cars outside. Do the scavenger hunt because it’s pretty fun and it will take you a while. They are adding more all the time and have big plans!

If you’re ever near Granby I highly recommend that you visit the Moffat Road Railroad Museum. The route to it is easy to navigate especially if you are skiing or staying at Winter Park. The attractions are fantastic to train enthusiasts of any kind or age. The cost is inexpensive and worth the bang for our buck. Every time I go they add something new, who knows what they will have as an attraction next time I visit. I hope you enjoyed reading my review on the Moffat Road Railroad Museum.
