The Vacation To Great Wolf Lodge

Hayden Basler, Jr. Reporter

“Missouri?!” I exclaimed as we passed over the state line after making a wrong turn. We pulled off the interstate and found an empty lot with a little house in a big field and a railroad in the distance. Over to the west sat an old and vacant factory. We turned around and got back on the interstate going the opposite way from which we came. As we rode along in the red Nissan, we watched the signs carefully for our destination.

When we finally reached Kansas again, we also had to watch the exits because they went on to other exits that lead to other highways and entrances to Kansas City. Sadly we were stuck in traffic and we had to wait longer for our vacation. The roads we were stuck in were four to five lanes on each side of the road! We eventually found the correct interstate to Kansas City (I-435) and reached our exit; State Ave. We got off on State Ave and took a right onto Village West Pkwy. After that we took another onto Cabela Drive.

Finally, the red roofs of Great Wolf Lodge loomed into view. A blue and green checkered slide came out of the building and twisted and turned then went back in the building. The green and blue slide would be like a regular tube slide but there were parts where it had a giant sphere in the slide. Behind it was a yellow slide that curved in a semi-circle and went back in the building. Now we got ready to go see it for the first time.

We got out of the car, and went inside, where we stepped into the lobby. To the East of the lobby was the big front desk and in the middle of the lobby two couches faced each other and a fireplace faced the East. Above us hung a chandelier made of deer antlers and in the North, a clock tower stood. There were two balconies from the third and fourth floors and stairs on both sides of the clock tower. Behind the clock tower were two elevators. We went up to the desk and my mom asked them, “Is the room ready yet?” The worker answered, “not yet but almost.” Since it wasn’t ready, we decided to go explore. As we walked all I could think was, that the place was amazing. We walked up the stairs to the third level and found a window overlooking the indoor water park. After a great view of the water park, we went down stairs to the first floor. There, we found the arcade and the entrance to the water park. Soon, we decided we needed to eat so we rode the elevators and they had a glass window so you could see out of it as you rode. For lunch, my family and I went out to Wendy’s, and while we were there we got a message from Great Wolf Lodge telling us that the room was ready.

We went to our room at Great Wolf Lodge from Wendy’s where we unpacked and settled in the room. After we had our towels ready and all our swimming things we went to the first floor and opened the door to the indoor water park.  As we entered the water park, I smelled the chlorine. The first thing I did was stand under the huge bucket of water that dumped every 3 minutes. Right before it dumped a bell rang and it started tipping. Next thing I know I was drenched for lots of water poured all at once all over me. Surprisingly, it felt good and it left part of the fort dripping from the water.

After we were done with standing under the bucket, we climbed up the fort. We went up nets and through tunnels until we came to the top where there were two enclosed slides. One was red and the other was yellow. They both ended in troughs like the slides at our pool.  I chose to go down the red one first and it went fast. Inside there were small holes to let light through. It was really cool!! When I reached the end I went back up to go down the yellow one which was basically the same. When I got to the end I decided that the red slide was faster than the yellow slide.

My sister and I then decided to just swim in the pool, which was about 3 feet and 8 inches to 4 feet and 10 inches. As I plunged into the pool, I got some of the pool water in my mouth. We swam for a while, but the thought of the other slides distracted me so I decided I wanted to go down those. We went up lots of stairs and we were equal to the fourth level and we chose the yellow slide, for the line was shorter. We got in a raft and after about a minute or so it went dark. The slide was so dark you couldn’t see anything. Soon, we saw the light at the end of the slide and we ended in a trough. “That was awesome,” I thought. Then we went back up and got in another raft and rode down the blue slide. It was like a regular tube slide except you are in a raft and you go faster. We ended in 4’ water. Then the only one left to ride was the blue and green slide.

We got in the raft when it was our turn and when the light turned green we descended into the slide. My heart was racing really fast. We eventually came to the first sphere. It sent us to one side of the sphere and then the other. One time we went it even turned us backwards!!

After another hour or so of swimming we went to our room and changed into our clothes again. We went downstairs where people gathered at 8:00 P.M. to listen to a worker tell a story to you.   After the reader was done, we went to Walmart and bought some pizza and chips for dinner. After that, we went to bed and I was in a bottom bunk and my sister was on top.

Now, I sit here waiting until we can return to Great Wolf Lodge again. Or better yet, maybe even a different one like Texas. Or maybe I even just go to Texas to enjoy the beach. Yet whatever type of vacation it is, I know I will enjoy it. I hoped you enjoyed and recommend that your parents to go to Great Wolf Lodge.
