Did you know that wrestling has been around for over 15,000 years which is crazy? It’s really cool because it’s also one of my favorite sports. Also, Emporia High School has the most championships out of every other sport in the high school.
The suspense you have when you’re watching the numbers go up so fast and then before you know it you’re up in 2. When you’re looking around you can see other people warming up, and your heart rate goes up fast. Then you’re up in 1, so now you are the only one warming up. Right at this moment you see your opponent going up to the table and checking in. But you take a deep breath and give it your best.
Before the match, you’re thinking in your head which moves you’re gonna do. You know you are going to do the cradle on bottom which is where you lift his leg up and you start squeezing as hard as you can. And you also know that you’re going to do a suplex, which is where you wrap your arms around your opponent, lift them up, and slam them on the mat. Lastly, you are going to do a takedown to seal the deal, there are a lot of different takedowns but the takedown you’re going to do is a double leg. The double leg is where you grab both of their legs, pick them up, and bring them to the floor.
The match starts and you win the coin toss and you get the choice to be on top, bottom, or neutral, which are the starting positions. Top is where you’re on top of your opponent, and bottom is where you are on bottom and your opponent is on top of you. Lastly, neutral means you and your opponent are both standing up. During the match you choose top so you can do the cradle, when the ref blows the whistle he tries to get up but you get his hand and pull him down, now he’s on his stomach. So you grab his leg and put your other hand around his head and flip over and now he’s on his back, and the ref is counting 1, 2, but at the last second he kicks out so now you’re both neutral and the score is 2-1. Now the first round is over and your opponent gets to choose what position he wants to do. Your opponent decides to go neutral, so you’re both standing up. When the ref blows the whistle your opponent tries to go in for the shot but misses and you sprawl on him. But my leg got stuck and you couldn’t move so he rolled on top of you. Now the score is 2-3 and your opponent is winning. And you hear the buzzer go off and now the second period is over, so now you only have 1 more period to either tie it or get the win. The referee flips the coin and it lands on you so you choose bottom to be safe. When you both get down the ref blows the whistle and you try getting up but your opponent stops you. You’re looking at the clock and it reads 45 seconds left, you’re running out of time so you need to do something fast. So you try one more time to stand up, you’re using all your strength to lift your leg up and finally it gets up, but you’re not standing left and there’s only 5 seconds left. You get your other foot up but he’s still holding on 3 seconds left. You’re still squirming until finally with 1 second left you get out and tie it up 3-3 going into overtime. You get a minute to catch your breath and you know that you don’t get that long in overtime so you need to make a move fast, you know you want to do the suplex for your last move. When you both get on the line the ref blows the whistle and your opponent fakes you out by faking a shot. But you don’t flinch, you touch his head and pull it down and when he looks up you spin behind him, lift him up, and slam him on the mat. And all you hear in the crowd is cheering. You just won the state championship.
After the match, you shake your opponent’s hand and your hand gets raised. The smile on your face after your hand gets raised is amazing. Then you’re looking around and you see some of the best college wrestlers of all time, you see Spencer Lee, Aaron Brooks, and Jonathan Leow. They are all smiling at you and they look so proud. When you get off the mat you go see if you can get their autographs and they say that they want your autograph instead. Now your face is as red as a tomato and you don’t know what to say. Then you hear Spencer Lee say that he wants to have 1 on 1 lessons with you to give you some more tips and tricks. Then he walks away and your whole team is getting ready to celebrate with you. They pick you up and start cheering you on. If you want to know how to do one of the most famous wrestling moves, check out this video to learn how to do a cradle.
