Did you know that President Jimmy Carter loved to watch movies in the White House? Nobody has yet beat his record of watching 480 movies in the White House movie theater. On the topic of Washington D.C, let’s see why Washington D.C should become a state. Washington D.C. should be a state because there is taxation without representation, to fix the racial inequality, and D.C. has a larger population than some states.
The first reason why Washington D.C should become a state is because there is taxation without representation. According to DC Statehood, “DC takes on the responsibilities of statehood without enjoying all the rights and privileges embodied in the U.S. The Constitution is often referred to as ‘taxation without representation’.” This means that they don’t get the same benefits because they pay taxes and they won’t get anybody to represent them. Other states do have someone to represent them because they pay taxes.
The second reason is fixing the racial inequality. According to DC Statehood, “The average Black American voting power is only 75 percent as much representation as the average white American in the Senate and 55 percent to the Hispanic voter”. This means that people of color would have more voting power and be more equal,
The final reason is D.C. has a larger population than some states. According to DC Statehood, “D.C. has a larger population than two states – Wyoming and Vermont”. This means that it would be better as its own state rather than a small territory because it has more people.
Washington D.C should become a state because it has a bigger population, it could fix some racial inequality, and taxation without representation. If you think D.C should become a state, you should contact:
