Have you ever been overwhelmed or stressed out about homework? If so, you know it’s annoying. One solution to having less homework would be to go back to red and black days. We should go back to red and black days because we would get less homework because we did it in class. Also, your learning isn’t very rushed because you get more time, and there are lots of benefits to a longer class time.
Typically when you think of homework you think of doing it at home, but if you have a longer class time you might not have to do it at home or as much at home. This is because if you have a longer class time you’d probably have enough time to do it in class. According to shsoutherner, “When students are overwhelmed by too much homework, they may become burnt out and lose motivation to learn.” Which really means that if kids get too much homework they don’t want to learn as much.
Have your teachers ever tried to rush your learning? If your teachers have, you’d know that it makes it harder for you to learn. With longer class time your teachers wouldn’t have to rush it because we’d have an extra 20ish minutes, which means there is no need to rush your learning. Inspiringgirls.info says, “Stress that lasts for more than a couple of days, such as that experienced by a hurried child, has negative effects.” This means that the stress of rushing a kid through a brief class/too much work in a short period can impact the kid’s mental health.
Another thing is that when the class is longer you can have longer “on-task time”. According to Reading rockets, “Students who fall behind get the time to catch up. Students who are already keeping up have a chance to explore more.”and latimes says, “Longer Classes Give Students a Chance to Focus”. This means that students can get more work time and teachers can explain their directions more thoroughly. This means that students can be focused for longer instead of just being focused for 15 or 20 minutes, it could be more like 30!
We should go back to red and black days (5 blocks per day instead of 6) because we’d get more time to be on task, we won’t have to do as much homework at home, and class won’t be as rushed. This should greatly improve how some students do in class. If you think that we need to switch back you might consider talking to our counselors or principles.
