I Am Malala is a book that a select few in ELA are reading. It is an autobiography about Malala Yousafzai, a girl who stood up for her beliefs with passion and courage, even when it endangered her life. Malala was actually shot in the head on her school bus one day when she was fifteen for speaking out against the Taliban for her—and every other woman’s right—to get an education. She aspired to be a politician after she saw what had happened to her great country. Where girls were once allowed to go to school and walk the streets (although not so freely), they were not allowed to walk the streets at all when the Taliban came into Mingora, her hometown. She won multiple awards for her activism, and she even had a prize named after her. Malala Day will always be a commemoration of her bravery in speaking out for her beliefs and the fate of her country.
