“Talking about robots used to mean you were talking about the future. The Future is here.”, Dave Waters. Now A.I. is all around us everywhere you look you’ll see it. But with everything good there is bad. A.I. has and will continue to take job opportunities and enforce harmful stereotypes. I am here to show you just how harmful A.I. can become in future years.
Job Opportunities
We all know that A.I. will end up taking away a few jobs, but just how many are they going to take away? Well, according to Nexford University, “Artificial intelligence could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs”. This means that jobs from many different sectors of work will be lost to A.I. and that it will be harder to find jobs for the new generations.
Algorithm Bias
Another reason that artificial intelligence could be damaging is algorithm bias. Algorithm bias is when an algorithm makes decisions that disadvantage certain groups of people. This bias is caused because, “certain populations are underrepresented in the data used to train AI algorithms or because pre-existing societal prejudices are baked into the data itself.” according to Harvard Business Review. As said by Booz Allen Hamilton, “In fraud detection, biased AI can associate first names from other cultures with fraudulent accounts. Or, as above, biased A.I. recruiting tools can fail to consider entire segments of the population for certain jobs.” This means that it makes it harder for those whom A.I. is biased against to get the same results as someone whom AI is not biased against. It can take away job opportunities, healthcare, and make it harder to get a fair trial.
Artificial intelligence is helping with jobs all around the world as of now. They can make the workload easier which will help get it done faster, this will not only make a worker more efficient, but it will also help graphic design freelancers produce more work and make more money. This helps right now, but as touched on earlier it just makes it harder to get jobs in the future. The same tools that are helping now are making it easier for people not in the field to make the same quality of work as someone in the field, and taking those opportunities away in the future.
Interviewing
Now all of this might seem like it’s years in the future but it’s happening right now too. I interviewed a Marketing Manager, named Justin Ogleby, on his experience with A.I..
Q: What are your opinions on A.I.?
A: A.I. is complex. It is going to be good for some people. It will make their jobs easier, it’s gonna make things faster and quicker, but at the same time it will completely change everything. So new people coming in to those same jobs are going to have a rougher time, and some of those jobs might no longer exist in the future. Everything is going to have to change.
Q: How is A.I. helping you in your job?
A: I do Marketing, so A.I. helps me quite a bit. It has made my job a lot quicker. I use it for everything from writing posts, to doing social media posts, creating the images for those posts, and helping me come up with ideas.
Q: Is there any negative effects of A.I. to your job?
A: Yes, it is quickly getting to the point where everyone is using A.I. And the stuff that people care about is not going to be A.I. written, so we have a very small window where we can write A.I. stuff, and it be useful and people understand it and like it. But in the future that might change, and people might not like anything that is A.I. written.
Q: How do you think A.I. will affect future jobs?
A: I think a lot of future jobs will go away. And that is a lot of jobs, a lot of the economy will have to change. Everything from Graphic design, logo design, marketing, writing, journalism, accounting, almost every job will be affected by this. People already in the industry will probably be okay, they can use these tools to help them work quicker and faster. But what’s going to happen is that since you need less people to do those jobs, there’s not going to be as many people being hired in the future.
Ultimately A.I. has been and will continue to affect us in the years to come. It will take job opportunities, and create a harmful environment. We spoke to someone in the industry and got their thoughts on AI to see how it is already affecting us and learned that though it can be useful it still has many negative effects on our world. That is why I believe that A.I. is fundamentally changing our world in ways that we are not ready for. I hope that after reading this story you know better how the world around us is changing and how A.I. will further affect the rest of your life.
