Have you ever wondered how the mind of Green Team’s social studies teacher works? I have too, if you haven’t already guessed. That’s part of the reason why I’m writing this! To delve deeper into the mind of every eighth and seventh grader’s favorite social studies (and for some ELA) teacher, Mr. Hawley.
Q: This is a question that everyone probably asks, but who is your favorite student?
A: Well, I would say the best teachers are also students, so can I vote for myself?
Q: Yeah, but why are you voting for yourself?
A: Um, well, I just have to live with me, and I have to look at myself in the mirror every morning, so it would be weird to vote against myself.
Q: What’s your favorite class to teach, and why?
A: I don’t know. I would say favorite classes are like favorite children. There are unique and great things about all of them.
Q: Do you have a favorite block to teach? Like your first, second, third?
A: Not really. I mean, it’s kinda like it’s one of those things where you have kids. There are good things and bad things about every one of them. It is kind of hard in the afternoons when my coffee’s worn off.
Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: My favorite book? I would have to go with the Power Broker, by Robert Caro.
Q: What’s the book about?
A: It basically tells the story of Robert Moses, who practically built New York.
Q: Very off topic question, but do you like cats or dogs better, and why?
A: Dogs. Why would I want to hang out with a creature that ignores me? I already spend my entire day with teenagers.
Q: What did you most like that we went over in social studies?
A: I had a lot of fun with the Asia unit. A lot of the kids really loved Chu Ju, so I’d say Asia.
Q: What is your favorite upcoming thing we’re going to go over in the Kansas unit later on?
A: I’d have to say that I love talking about William Allen White.
Q: What would you say your strengths are, and why?
A: I don’t know necessarily that it is a strength, but I really, honestly, care about the students that I work with, and that makes my job really easy because when you show someone love and respect, you will get that in return.
Q: Going off of that, what are your weaknesses?
A: I think I could probably be more organized. I think that’s kind of a big deal.
Now you and I know more about one of the best teachers on Green Team. He enjoyed teaching the Asia unit (mainly due to the Chu Ju book) his favorite book is Power Broker, he enjoys hanging out with creatures that actually enjoy spending time with him in return (weird that he teaches seventh graders if that’s the case, though), and he enjoys talking about William Allen White in the Kansas unit. If you ever see Mr. Hawley around school, make sure to say hi. Thank you for letting me interview you, Mr. Hawley!
