Have you ever wondered how to improve your basketball skills? There are many different ways you can improve in basketball. Some examples are the Mikan Drill, 5 spot shooting, Form shooting drill, Dribbling, Solo three-point shooting drill.
Mikan Drill
The Mikan drill focuses on your finishing around the rim. You will constantly shoot left-handed and right-handed layups. If you’re just starting out in basketball, I would recommend making 10 layups on both sides; meaning you would make 10 right-handed layups and 10 left-handed layups. Another way to do the Mikan drill, is when you throw a ball off the backboard and rebound it, then you put it up and score the layup.
5 Spot Shooting
5 spot shooting is exactly as it sounds. You pick 5 shots pretty close to the rim and work on shooting from each of those individual shots. You can shoot from right in front of the rim to the three-point line. If you are close to the rim, you shouldn’t jump to shoot it unless you have to. But if you shoot a three-pointer or a long two, then you should jump so your shot has more power.
Solo Three-Point Drill
The solo three-point drill is when you shoot a lot of three-pointers from all around the court. Most people like to shoot threes from the from the top of the key because you can shoot the ball a little over the rim because the backboard can make it go in. The corners are the harder spots to hit three-pointers because if you shoot it too far it will go over the rim which is called an air ball.
Form Shooting Drill
The form shooting drill is where you stand really close to the rim and work on your form. The point of this drill is to make it so that you swish every shot from that spot. A swish is when you make a shot without hitting the rim or backboard and it only touches the net. Another thing you can do is work on your form on the side of the backboard so your shot is always straight.
Dribbling Drill
In the dribbling drill, all you do is work on dribbling like going behind the back or just doing a crossover. Your dribbling is really important in basketball because it is the way you shake defenders off to get an open shot. What I like to do is dribble the ball 3 times then either do a between the legs or a behind the back so I can improve in both of those skills.
In conclusion, there are many different ways to get better at basketball. There are a lot of different basketball skills that I didn’t talk about, like playing defense or working on playmaking. If you would like to learn more about getting better at basketball, check out this link.
