According to Get The Facts Out, “About half of all science and math majors report an interest in becoming a teacher.” I recently had the opportunity to interview a 6th-grade math teacher, specifically Mr. Skiles on Lime team. Here you will find out why he became a teacher, whether he has favorite students, and much more.
Q: What is your favorite class to teach and why?
A: Probably Block 2, which is Advanced Math, because we can have different conversations about math in general, and all of the conversations will be interesting, and they like math.
Q: Who is your favorite student in that class?
A: I don’t have favorite students.
Q: What are your strengths?
A: I think that I get along with just about everybody. I don’t know anyone that hates me. Also, I think I’m competitive and a hard worker.
Q: What are your weaknesses?
A: I’m not very organized.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: Being outdoors; hunting, fishing, sports, and also working on my farm.
Q: What got you teaching math?
A: There just happened to be a position open and because I kind of enjoyed math and am relatively good at it they asked me if I wanted it. My degree is actually in elementary school so I cover all the different subjects, and I’ve taught things such as science, history, and computers.
Q: What are your favorite units to teach?
A: Circles and statistics, so generally probability and averages.
Q: What is your favorite part of teaching?
A: I really enjoy when a student doesn’t understand a concept or doesn’t get what we’re doing and then it just kind of clicks for them and they’re just proud of themselves.
So, there you have it, folks. Mr. Skiles is a relatively adventurous person who enjoys being outside, seeing students proud of themselves, and especially enjoys circles and statistics. If you see Mr. Skiles, go ahead and give him a wave!
