Have you ever been outside on a hot summer day and wanted a nice refresher? I know most of you have, so here are some nice cooling drinks that you would enjoy on a hot day or maybe just when you want a tasty drink. I will be talking about 4 drinks that you could enjoy!
First off is Agua Fresca. Agua Frescas are unfiltered juice basically; fruits and Water blended with lime and sweetener, but just a little bit. Since it’s not like regular juice it won’t cause the blood sugar spike that regular juices can. They can be made with multiple fruits such as pineapple, strawberries, cucumber, cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon! Personally I love watermelon Agua Fresca but that’s probably because I love watermelon. Here is a recipe if you might wanna make yourself some Agua Frescas!
Up next is Horchata! Horchata (pronounced or-CHAH-tah) is a popular drink that you will probably see in many Mexican restaurants. It is like a sweet milk rice beverage. It’s made out of white rice, milk, cinnamon sticks, vanilla extract, almonds, water, and evaporated milk. There is also coconut horchata which is made with coconut, coconut water, and coconut milk. Either way made can be fine. They shouldn’t take long to make so I think it’s easy. For me, I love just regular horchata. So, if you’re trying it for the first time, I would try the regular one first. If you want to make it, here are some recipes! Rice Horchata, Coconut Horchata.
Second to last is Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea). Agua de Jamaica is a nice refreshing drink that can almost be drunk in any season. It’s also basically just Agua Fresca, but I wouldn’t put it in that category. Agua de Jamaica can be either made sweet or tart. I’m someone that loves anything sweet so I would prefer it sweeter. If you like it sweet, add ½ cup of sugar, and if you would like it a little more tart, then add ¼ cups of sugar. It’s made with hibiscus flowers. Here is a recipe that might help you make a Agua de jamaica!
Lastly is Champurrado. Champurrado isn’t really a drink to have when it’s warm outside, but it’s still a drink I really enjoy and think you should enjoy too. Champurrado is a warm & thick corn-flour-based beverage. It’s made with Mexican chocolate, milk, cinnamon, piloncillo (raw cane sugar), and corn flour. Here’s a recipe if you’d like to try it. Champurrado.
Overall Horchata, Agua de Jamaica, Agua Fresca, and Champurrado are all super refreshing drinks (maybe expect Champurrado) and I think you should try them all at least at one point during the summer. If you do try it, enjoy! If you’re not really feeling about making any of those drinks, some places in town you could go to are El Lorito, El Marmol, Mi Chavelita, Casa Ramos, or basically almost any Mexican restaurant.
