If you didn’t know, Folklorico has been around for seventy-two years. I began performing folklorico when I was three years old. My sisters and I perform on the Day of the Dead and Cinco De Mayo, as well as whenever someone asks our group to perform, like at ESU. Folklorico is a Mexican tradition that people do because it makes them happy. So, I am going to teach you further about Folklorico.
The music for Folklorico has some different types of tones and beats, so you know where the beat/music changes. It is also played by mariachis so you can hear them play in real life, a mostly used song is called La Negra. To me the music makes me feel happy because I’ve been doing Folklorico for a while.
The outfits for Folklorico come in all different colors and types. For the boys, they wear a suit with a white shirt underneath the black vest that matches the pants. To me, when I wear the Folklorico dress, it feels nice to remember how I looked when I was younger with the dress compared to how I look now. The Folklorico dresses cost around $50 to $350 and the men’s costumes cost $10 to $350.
The tradition/culture for Folklorico came from Mexico. It also helps spread what type of music your culture has and if you do folklorico it helps on what you do on the music that you dance to, for me the culture helps with my family because some of my family members used to dance Folklorico. Folklorico has gotten passed down from generations of family. Through stories and experiences it can take people back to pre-colonial times. If they made a regional dance, it can help show their part of Mexico and their version of their history.
