Have you ever wanted to skateboard before, but you can’t find anywhere to actually skateboard? That’s a problem that many future skateboarders face. According to The Skatepark Project, “only 3,900 skate parks are in the U.S but there are 9 million skateboarders”. That’s why I think skateboard parks should be made in almost every city to provide a local spot for skateboarding. Skateboarding is an official sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics, an excellent and fun way to build balance and strength, and a lack of skateboard parks have forced many skateboarders to break the law. Reading this story will teach you what you can do to help build skateboard parks and how they can affect a community.
The first reason why skateboard parks should be made is that it has been officially recognized as a sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics. According to The 2024 Paris Olympics ,” That means that if you’re good and passionate enough in skateboarding you can even bring home a gold medal and over 20 thousand dollars.” But people who are passionate enough can’t get good if they don’t have the proper parks to practice in. It’s a waste of potential for some people which is why I think everyone should have a local place to skate.
But why don’t skateboarders just skate on roads? With all the laws in place for skateboarding on roads, it’s almost impossible to find anywhere locally. According to Street Skating, “Where there is no sidewalk, shoulder, parking strip, or bike lane, a skater may use a portion of the vehicle lane. The road may be the only available place to use the skateboard.” A slogan known as “Skateboarding is not a crime – Wikipedia” was made to support the rights of skateboarders skating freely. So yes, skateboarders can skate on roads but the laws implemented heavily limit the road for skateboarders.
Another reason why skateboard parks should be made is that skateboarding holds many physical and even mental benefits to it. “Skateboarding improves balance and coordination, muscle strength and endurance, and increased flexibility”, as stated by Thriving Beyond the Board: The Surprising Health Benefits of Skateboarding and Longboarding . These are all important things to have if you want to live a healthy life. Skateboarding is a way to relieve stress and build a sense of self-achievement. Although not as calorie-consuming as running, it can be a fun alternative as it’s less pressure on your feet.
Skateboarding is an important sport in the Olympics with plenty of benefits physically and mentally. With all the strict rules in place for skateboarding it can be hard to find anywhere locally to skate. That’s why skateboard parks should be made in every city. We have one in Emporia but other places around the world don’t. If you want to donate to organizations making skateboard parks around the world, donate to The Skatepark Project so they can fund skateparks all over the U.S.
