What makes a good school lunch? Something healthy, something that gives you energy, something tasty, and a little sweet treat on the side as well? Schools should stop following the nutritional guidelines. I will be telling you my 3 reasons with evidence and why following the nutritional guidelines is bad.
The first reason is it makes kids rebel and eat more junk food. According to CNN health, “some students hear guidance around “healthy eating” and then rebel against it by avoiding the recommended items and seeking out the very foods labeled as bad.” This means that kids will want to eat more junk if we keep following the nutritional guidelines instead of eating healthy.
Another reason is that people may not like the school food which leads to food waste.
According to Penn State University, “students waste their lunch but they mostly throw away their vegetables and fruit that is 50% of their plate.” This means that it will keep growing on that kids throw away their food due to them not liking the vegetables nor the fruits and sometimes their whole tray. Wasting food is bad because food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide.
The final reason is that EMS should stop following the nutritional guidelines is that kids are missing nutrition. According to CNN health, “Missing much-needed nutrition at a time when teens have a high need for calories and nutrients for growth and development.” This means that kids or teens will not be able to grow as much because they will need more calories for their growth development.
Schools should not follow the nutritional guidelines because it can make kids rebel and eat more junk food, food waste, and kids are missing nutrition . Parents can worry that their kid is not being healthy enough with the school lunches with the nutritional guidelines. Also, they think kids should get snacks during class because the lunches aren’t enough for them to fill their stomachs up. If you want to change the nutritional guidelines, you can contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
