You might recognize the name Martin Luther King Jr, but do you know what he did and who he was? Martin Luther King Jr was born on January 15th, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Martin Luther King, Jr., “King was heavily influenced by his father, who was a church pastor who King saw stand up to segregation in his daily life”. His father also led a march to protest voting rights discrimination, Martin left high school at the age of 15 for Atlanta’s Morehouse College an all male historically black university; it was also attended by his father and maternal grandfather. Martin graduated in 1948, leaving with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, deciding to enroll in a seminary in Pennsylvania before deciding to get a doctorate in theology at Boston University. while there he met and married Coretta Scott. After University, Martin went back to the south at 25 years old where he became a pastor, in 1955 Martin was a part of a bus boycott. A boycott started when Rosa Parks refused to give her seat up to a white man. That boycott lasted for over a year. Martin actually organized the protests of the buses, his arrest as the boycotts leader launched Martin onto the national stage as a leading figure in the civil rights movement. I hope this story taught you a little more about a civil rights icon that sadly was assassinated on April 4th, 1968, but at least we can look back to see all that he has done give to people more rights and make us all equal.
