Have you ever wondered what the best fishing spots are around Emporia? Well, if you did, I’m going to tell you. In this story, we’ll be talking about King Lake, Champions Landing, and Melvern Lake.
First is King Lake. It is right across from ESU. The lake kind of looks like a triangle. It has a variety of fish in there depending on what season it is. In the warm seasons, like spring and summer, they have catfish, bluegill, and other common pond fish. But in the cold weather, they stock it with rainbow trout and black and white crappie. I would say the best type of bait for the warmer seasons would be worms or hotdogs. They work very well. For the cold seasons, I would use a type of rooster jig that’s just the right size for the trout. If you pop it by the rocks, you can pull out crappie left and right.
Next is Champions Landing. It’s a country club with food, drinks and a pool. The pond is stocked with largemouth bass and bluegill. Although they do not stock fish during the cold months. Personally, I like to use one of three: a soft plastic worm, frog, or a spinnerbait. There are a lot of hang downs and vegetation with semi-murky water.
Next is Melvern Lake; it is right outside Emporia. It is a pretty decent-sized lake with catfish, bass, and bluegill. I like using either live bait or a Texas rig. It has pretty clear water with lots of different places with different vegetation, so it really depends on where you are.
No matter where you are, follow the rules and be safe. And remember to be careful, pay attention to what you’re doing, and stay hydrated. Fishing is a beautiful sport with many wonders that there are to explore. If you get the chance, fish and have fun.
