“There is no art without Eros.” You might have heard of cupid, god of love. He’s famous during February, the month of love, and Valentine’s day, but he’s actually based on someone else; Greek mythology’s god of love Eros.
Who is Eros? While in Greek mythology he is the god of love. Son of chaos the original primeval emptiness of the universe, but later tradition made him the son of Aphrodite, Eros’s father varies, through Zeus, Ares and Hermes. Eros was a god of passion and fertility; he had a brother Anteros that was sometimes described as his opponent. According to Eros world history, Eros was depicted most times as a child or infant in stories and art.
Eros was presented with a bow and unlimited arrows. His arrows would work on both mortals and humans. With them he would unexpectedly select his targets and strike their heart bringing confusion and irrepressible feelings for his or Aphrodite’s wish. source Eros world history One day Eros had scraped himself with his own arrow and he fell in love with Psyche who later became his wife for eternity.
Eros does end up having a daughter with Psyche after she turned immortal and lived with the gods. Their daughter’s name is Voluptas or Hedone. Now Eros’ death is never properly disclosed but he had a different encounter with death. While in Greek story Eros went up against Thanatos, Greek god of death.
