Have you ever wanted to interview someone who went to college to play a sport? Today, I will be interviewing David Evans. He went to Emporia State University to play college baseball. Other stuff about David Evans is that he played for ESU from 2001-2004 and played third base.
Q. Can you describe your experience playing baseball? A. I enjoyed every minute of it. Some of the best memories with friends in my life. Q. Can you describe your approach to training and conditioning? A. I always thought to put in a lot of time and a bunch of reps and that is what prepared me physically to be ready for games. Q. How do you prepare for games mentally? A. I was always good at clearing my mind when I would get on the field. The only thing I would be thinking is baseball and not letting things that happened early mess up your mind. Q. How do you handle the pressure of playing in high-stakes games? A. taking it pitch by pitch and at-bat by at-bat and if you did your part everything would work out. Q. How do you handle failure and setbacks on the field? A. not letting anything happen before that affects this moment.
Q. How did you work with and communicate with your teammates? A. We built a lot of bonds on and off the field so it helped us communicate during the game. Q. In which area would you say your fielding skills excel, and why? A. I was told I had soft and quick hands, so I could react quickly to any hop in the baseball, and I always felt like a wall and tried not to let anything get by me. Q. Which pitch types are you most comfortable hitting and why? A. Fastball was always the easiest because it felt like the faster it came in, the further it would go. Q. How do you prepare for a game against a pitcher with an unfamiliar style? A. We didn’t have video back then to watch so it was all about watching the pitcher during warmup and when you were on deck or in the dugout. Q. What techniques do you use to improve your speed and agility on the base paths? A. I spend a lot of time running stairs and agility-type workouts to try and get faster most if it came watching the pitcher.
Q. How do you stay focused and motivated during a losing streak? A. For me, it was easy. I hated losing and was focused on doing everything to help the team out. Q. How do you analyze and learn from your performance after each game? A. Well, any player that wants to get better always looks at the little things and going back and self-critique myself to help my team any way I could. Q. What steps do you take to recover quickly after a physically demanding game? A. I use ice and rest and I was a big believer in jogging to help with soreness. Q. What’s your approach to studying opposing teams’ strengths and weaknesses? A. Since we did not have film, the main thing was watching players that would like to bunt or steal and watching pitchers to see what they like to do in certain scenarios. Q. What role does mental preparation play in your pre-game routine? A. For me it was all about clearing my mind and having confidence about hitting the ball every time, and not having doubts when I get in the batter’s box.
In conclusion, I hope that after reading this you can go play the sport you love and do some of the things he did. This was a fun time to interview my dad. Have fun playing baseball.
