Cats can be complicated. Especially if you have a picky pregnant queen who meows and whines all day. I can help you understand what to expect when your cat has her kitting (a kitting is when your cat gives birth).
How to tell if your cat is pregnant:
Your cat will usually start to look more plump and then her mammary glands will start to be more visible and also will start to enlarge. She will also probably start moving around less than she already does.
Amount of food to give her:
Your cat will probably start wanting more food because she is eating for more than just herself! A pregnant cat should gradually increase her food intake, with a 25% to 50% increase in calories by the end of her pregnancy. I also suggest that you give double the amount of food on her last week.
What to expect in labor:
When your cat starts going into labor, you should stay calm and get towels. I wouldn’t pick her up because she will probably scratch you. Your cat will know what to do. Don’t be grossed out when the bleeding starts. You won’t need to get scissors to cut the umbilical cord because your cat will chew through them. Once your cat is done I would recommend keeping a close eye on her so she doesn’t eat her kittens. You will also need to give her more nutrients because she is recovering from the process.
I hope that if your cat does have kittens that you will know what to expect and do for her. One website that you could visit to learn more about a pregnant cat is Small Door Vet.com. My cat personally has never had children because she was fixed but I have read a big book on cats and what it generally said was the cat knows what it is doing through instinct and so you don’t really need to worry about it too much.
