Have you ever wondered what type of transportation do police use? This story is going to be about all the different types of police transportation. Some of the different types of transportation are bicycles, police cruisers, horses, and helicopters. I’m going to talk about all four and write about how convenient they are. I am also going to write about what they are used for.
The first type of transportation is the bicycle. Bicycles are good for penetrating crowds and the ability to navigate swiftly and around traffic easier. One bad thing about bicycles is that any accidents with vehicles and potential for injury can also happen. Some situations that bicycles are used for are routine patrol, traffic enforcement to crowd control and specialized events.
The second type of transportation is a police cruiser. This type of vehicle is bad because they can be target for violence, experience high mileage and engine wear due to idling, and potentially being driven harshly which could lead to accelerated wear and tear. Police cruisers are good for durability, featuring reinforced suspensions, heavy-duty brakes, and robust cooling systems. Some situations that you would use a police cruiser for is if you patrol a block, quickly reach incident scenes, and transport and temporarily detain suspects.
The third type of transportation is a horse. A bad thing about having a horse is they can be injured and hard surfaces can damage their hooves and joints. A good time to use a horse for transportation is crowd control, public relations, and increased visibility for officers. Some situations that you would use a horse is if you go to wilderness areas where they may not be able to get a patrol car.
The last type of transportation is a helicopter. A bad thing about a helicopter is they can be costly to purchase and operate, raise concerns about privacy and potential targeting of certain communities, and may be perceived as intimidating or an occupying force. A good thing about helicopters is that they have some advantages like enhanced surveillance capabilities, quicker response times, and the ability to patrol larger areas than ground units. Some situations that you would use a helicopter are traffic control, ground support, search and rescue, high-speed car pursuits, observation, air patrol and control of large-scale public events and/or public order incidents.
These are only four of the different types of transportation, but there’s a lot more like motorcycles, SUV’s, vans, and armored trucks. So, there are lots of ways for police officers to get around. If you want to find out what other police cars they use, you can click here.
