Me holding Kambrynn for the first time.

Kaylee Lane, Junior Reporter

In this story you will learn about the day my niece, Kambrynn Alex Gurley, was born.  Kambrynn was born on Wednesday, March 16th, 2016, in Wellington, Kansas. Her birth had such an impact on me because she passed away when she was only 5 months and 25 days old. She passed away on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. Her parents are Briana Marie Lane and Aaron Alex Gurley.

I woke up around 8:00 a.m. on March 16th. I thought it was going to be a normal day so I went out to the kitchen to eat my Fruity Pebbles. Then, about 30 minutes later, we got a phone call. At first, my grandma was hesitant to answer the phone because it was an unknown number. But when she did it was a hospital so we both freaked out. Me being the curious person I am, was eavesdropping the whole entire time. After she hung up she told me that my sister Brianna had just gone to the hospital because she thought she was going into labor. We waited until 11:00 A.M. just to confirm that it wasn’t false labor so we didn’t make a trip to Wellington for nothing. I was so excited to travel, even though the car ride was only two hours long. My grandma, my sister (Kenna), and I all packed a backpack and then we were off to see Brianna in the Wellington Hospital. We were so happy and stressed at the same time because we didn’t know where we were going and had to use Google Maps to get there. We finally made it to the hospital and we were all ecstatic.

We got into Brianna’s hospital room and I was confused. I was asking everyone a lot of questions because I was only 9, one month away from being 10, at the time. I was so amazed by being able to hear Kambrynn’s heartbeat because it was the first time I had heard the heartbeat of an unborn baby. I was watching the EKG and asking the nurse so many questions, which she was nice enough to answer. My grandma and I had never been to Brianna’s house in Wellington so Kenna drove us to Brianna’s house and we got to look at Kambrynn’s nursery. It was so cute and all of Kambrynn’s clothes were adorable. Then, we went and got some lunch because the doctor told us we had at least two hours before Brianna gave birth. After that, we headed back to the hospital and a lot more family members were there to see Brianna and Kam after she was born. I was just coloring with my nieces and cousins, waiting for Kambrynn to be born. Then, Kenna said, “I am going to order pizza for us. What do you want?” I was so shocked that it was 6:30 P.M. already and Kambrynn still wasn’t born. We were still waiting for Kambrynn and it was around 9:25 P.M. A nurse came into the “Family Waiting Room” we were all in and said, “Whoever wants to watch the birth should come with me now.” Since I was only 9, I wasn’t allowed to watch the birth. But, Aaron, Aaron’s mom, Brianna’s grandma, and Brianna’s sister (Kenna) all were in the hospital room watching the birth of Kambrynn.

At 9:44 P.M. my grandma brought me into the hospital room and I got to see tiny baby Kambrynn being cleaned, measured, and weighed. She was born at 9:42 P.M., was 20.5 inches long and weighed 7.2 pounds. She was a healthy baby and there were no complications. After Brianna and Kambrynn were cleaned up, all of Kambrynn’s aunts and cousins, Aaron step-dad, Kyslynn (sister of Kambryn), and a friend of Brianna’s with her 2 kids joined the room the see the new bundle of joy. We took so many pictures and I got to hold Kambrynn, which was extremely special to me. We tried to stay at the hospital as long as possible, since Wellington was two hours away. But it was getting dark and we didn’t know how to get home unless we used Google Maps.

We made it home after midnight and we were so tired but we were also super energized from the action-packed day. We loved Kambrynn so much and we tried to enjoy the days we had with her. But that is another story that I will write later. There was just something different about Kambrynn and her birth. It wasn’t because Brianna was in labor for 14 hours, it wasn’t because Kambrynn was super cute, and it wasn’t because so many people loved her. It was because she was an angel sent from Heaven. My niece, Kambrynn Alex Gurley, is an angel living her best life in Heaven right now.
