Around Emporia with Emma: International Food Festival
More stories from Emma Weast
April 14th – at Emporia State University, the International Food Festival took place. This festival housed several foods from all over the world, including,Tunisia, Paraguay, Bolivia, and much more!
I first arrived through big open doors, to the smell of several inviting foods. There were sixteen stations, tables laid out with foods displayed on them. Behind the table was the country’s flag, and a couple of people serving the food. My mom, brother and I found an empty table and put our things down before going to pay for tickets. How the money worked was that you pay them with money, and they give you a certain amount of tickets that stood for one dollar. We went and paid, and then I scouted the tables to see what I could eat.
I started off the meal with Chinese Beef Lo Mein. It was served in a medium sized plastic bowl from the Chinese table. Then, my mom payed for Bangladesh chicken. You could get spicy or normal and she got normal. Then, I tried the Korean Pancake. The pancake was a pancake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a couple slices of banana, chocolate syrup, and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Then, I tried some German chocolate cake. It was super rich and wasn’t dry or crumbly. After that, I couldn’t eat anymore!
After I finished eating, there was a singer who played the guitar. He played a couple of songs for the listening audience. I’m not exactly sure what the purpose for this event is, but I think that it’s for people to expand their horizons of food. It also gives a chance for the native countries to share their national or favorite dishes.
The International Food Festival was a success! Lots of people showed up for the event and the turnout was good. The next time ESU holds an event like this, I suggest going and even taking a friend! If you want to hear about more events at Emporia State, visit this link: https://www.emporia.edu/.
