The Black Death- in the 14th century a plague came over from the near East and killed millions in Europe. This large disease started with a ship from Crimea and Asia in October 1347. Not only sailors were aboard this ship, but also rats. The rats were the cause of the spread of this disease. This plague never really went away, but it returned about 800 years later. The Black Death led to an astonishing 20 million deaths in just 4 years.

Civil War- The Civil War was the bloodiest war ever fought in American history. The Civil War began in Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay, on April 12th, 1861. According to nps.gov, “During the war, 2 million soldiers fought for the North, and 750,000 fought for the South.” In the middle of the war, President Abraham Lincoln issued his famous Emancipation Proclamation. The North won the war, but by the end of the war, nearly every American knew someone who had died in the conflict. The main cause of the Civil War was slavery and states rights. The last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13th, 1865.

Holocaust- The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was a genocide of European Jews during World War II.  Encylopedia.ushmm.org claims that “The start of the Holocaust began in 1941 when Nazi Germany and its collaborators targeted around 6 million Jews throughout Europe and murdered around two-thirds of the European Jewish population. Jews were killed both in mass shootings and in death camps mainly based in Poland. The reason the Nazis killed the Jews was because of their religion and their assumptions about their race. The holocaust ended on May 8th, 1945, in Europe.
