The Sections of a Band Parade

Leo Sonnakolb, Contributor

There have been marching bands since the 13th century. Have you ever wondered what instruments are playing in the parade?  I am going to tell you about one instrument from each section. There are three sections. You are gonna find percussion, woodwind, and brass.

The first section is percussion. You will learn some facts about the snare drum. For the people marching with the snare drum, they have a metal holder for the drum that goes over the player’s shoulders that the drum attaches. The drum weighs about 10-18 lbs. It takes a lot for the drummer to concentrate on marching playing and timing.

Now we are moving to the brass section and the instrument that’s is probably new to you is the mellophone. You’re probably wondering what that is. It is a trumpet and a baritone/euphonium It makes it easier for baritone/euphonium players to march with their instrument. Otherwise, it would be hard for them because their instrument is decently sized. A mellophone usually weighs about 4 pounds.

The last section is woodwind; the instrument is an alto saxophone. When you think of the saxophone this is probably the one you would think of. It is the smaller saxophone. Saxophone players use a neck strap to help hold the saxophone. An alto sax(saxophone) weighs 4lb 5oz. A sax player has to worry about what buttons to push while they are playing cause there are so many that they use.

Finally the conclusion. Now that you know the sections of a parade. What is your favorite section? You have plenty of time before marching season. The season starts in August and can last till mid-December at most. There are so many more instruments than the ones I talked about. Go to your local music store to see what they are.
