Have you ever wondered what a character would in their backpack, like how you just unzip and see their whole life laid out well? This week, we will be talking about 5 things Amadou from Bitter Side of Sweet would have in his backpack. Amadou isn’t the type of kid to carry school books; he’s on a cacao farm in the heat all day. Even after the work is done, he still has to look out for Seydou. Here are 5 things he’d definitely have in his pack to survive
5. Water bottle
Amadou would have the water bottle because for him and Seydou to survive they need water.
When Seydou had a fever they used the water to help cool him down so he doesn’t get over heated. This made the list because Seydou’s health is important to him so the water is good.
4.The cacao seeds
This is what they cut to get from the trees in the book. While he would work on the plantation to gather these seeds when he got hungry he would also eat them and share with his little brother. This made the list because it is an important part of the book and story.
3.A pill bottle
During the book, Seydou (Amadou’s brother) got an infection from a cut and had to get his arm chopped off. He had also gotten a fever so when escaped the camp the only thing helping Seydou was medicine. This made the list because it’s important to Amadou to keep Seydou safe.
2. Bandages
In the book, when Seydou gets his arm chopped off, they need bandages to help it get better. It’s important to him so it can keep Seydou safe. It made the list because Amadou cares about his brother and wants to keep him healthy and safe.
1. His machete
The machete is the main tool Amadou uses on the farm. It is important to him because that’s how he does his work and protects Seydou. This made the list because throughout the book, his machete is something he uses to protect himself, his brother, and Khadija
In conclusion, this was a great book to read and I definitely recommend it. Seeing what Amadou carries in his pack shows you that his life is about survival, not just farming. It gives you a real look at what it’s like to live on a cacao farm, which is something most people don’t know about or even think about. There are a lot of heavy emotions and the way Amadou protects Seydou makes it a book you won’t forget.
