Have you ever read Refugee? Well I have and there’s 3 stories in one, that’s the thing about alan grates. I think my personal favorite was Isabel, that’s why this story is an interview about Isabel. I’ll be asking Isabel 10 questions and I’ll be answering them too because Isabel is a made up person but the events are real, so she obviously can’t answer them but I am going to answer them if I was her.
Q: Why was Ivan so important to you?
A: ”Ivan was so important to me because he was my best friend from childhood and we’ve been inseparable ever since we were kids.”
Q: What was your favorite part of being on the boat for so long?
A: “My favorite memory of being on the boat was probably when everyone was singing and dancing and having a good time.”
Q:How would you describe yourself?
A: “I would say I’m fun to be around. I love being with friends and lastly I always try to do my best.”
Q: How were you feeling when you gave away your trumpet?
A: “I was feeling sad but I’m happy that I got to Florida and my family got to say so i think it was worth it and I can always get another one.”
Q: How did your relationship change with your Lito from when you left Cuba and when you got there?
A: “My relationship with my Lito was great. We would laugh all the time, but when we got on the boat there were a lot of conflicts with us and everyone else on the boat and something changed but we are still super close.”
Q: How did you feel about your dad freaking out and you had to become the strong one.
A: “I felt like I matured and I was proud that I did that because everyone was acting crazy and someone needed to step up.”
Q: How did you feel about being told to go back to Cuba?
A: “I was scared, mad and overwhelmed and I wanted everyone to calm down because it was stressful and the only thing I could think about was Ivan.
Q: If you got to keep one thing from your house what would it be?
A: “If I got to keep one thing from my house it would be something that reminded me of Ivan, like his baseball hat of our baseball team, the Industriales.”
Q: Were there any times when you thought you were never going to get to Miami?
A: “Sometimes I thought it was a never ending sea. When Ivan died I wanted to go with him but I couldn’t and I had to stay strong for him.”
Q: What if Ivan never died, what do you think would’ve gone different?
A: “If Ivan never died I feel like when we got stopped in Miami then he would’ve freaked out and we would’ve gotten sent back instead of them letting us stay after everything.”
Now you know a bit about Refugee. And if you haven’t read it, then this might have spoiled it a bit. Even though you haven’t read it, you would like to. And if you liked this story, then read the book. I think it was one of the best books I’ve ever read. Every time I finished one of the little stories in it I couldn’t wait to read the rest. I read this book because of Mr. Hawley but I’m glad I did. This is a wonderful but sad book at the same time. See you next time.
