Have you ever wanted to know what you need to get started with art? Or what types of art there are? Or even what makes art, art? These are the questions that people ask when they’re walking in a bustling art museum. Where the air is old and slightly crisp, and colors surround you on all sides. This is what people want to know when they are making their own art, or when they see art on the side of the road. These questions are what you will find the answers to in this story.

Depending on what kind of art you want to make you’ll need different basics. My favorite is normal printer paper or a sketch pad and some crayons. If you want to do painting then watercolor paper and acrylic paints would be the best for a cheap option that works really well and makes some of my favorite art looks. Charcoal, graphite pencils, and a sketchbook would work for sketching or uncolored drawings. These are some pretty cheap supplies you can use to start making your art and still have vibrant colors and or designs.

There are many types of art including but not limited to clay, painting, and digital art. Clay art can be made in many different ways. You could throw it on a wheel, you could also sculpt it with your hands, both of these involve having to fire your clay inside a kiln. You can also find clay in the wild and make it that way. As Ancient Pottery states, “the best place to find clay are along floodplains of rivers and streams or on the bottoms of ponds, lakes and seas.” I have found clay at my grandparents multiple times and made sculptures out of it. Painting is another popular art form. Painting involves some kind of paint oil, acrylic, or any other kind will work, and some kind of surface, canvas, or paper. When painting, there are no limits. You can paint whatever you want; it doesn’t have to be something, it could be abstract. Digital art will be the last I will talk about. It is done online and is an easy way to make art that looks a certain way even if you don’t have the supplies. One great place to check out for making digital art would be Artlex.

One last thing I want to talk about is different artworks. There are many famous artworks around the world and everyone has a different perspective on them. Take The White Painting by Robert Rauschenberg for example. The White Painting is just a typical canvas painted white. That’s it. Many people don’t think that this artwork counts as art, but I believe that it is. Art is all up to the viewer, and I, the viewer, believe that even if it doesn’t seem like it, this is art. If it provokes feelings, or the artist or anyone else considers it art,  then it’s art. There are also more typical artworks like the Haystacks by Claude Monet, my favorite artist. He painted the same haystacks more than thirty times in different lighting and they are all completely different artworks, even though they look pretty similar. There are also sculptures like The Shuttlecocks at The Nelson-Atkins Museum, in Kansas City. They are also art even though they look wildly different from the paintings we have discussed before. The Shuttlecocks are meant to look like they are being tossed over a net, in this case being the museum building.

All in all, there are many different types of art and many different ways to get started. Not all art looks the same and as long as you or the artist believes that the work is art, then it is art.
