The topics I am going to tell you about today are being a volunteer firefighter, being a career firefighter, and having family members that are firefighters.
The first thing I am going to talk about is being a volunteer firefighter. The first thing is responding to a call., If you are a volunteer, you can choose whether you go on the call or not. It is very important that people actually want to go. The next thing I am going to talk about is training. Training is very important because some departments make you do training on your own time and there are very good programs out there to help you learn and do hands-on training. The last thing I am going to talk about is time because you could be doing anything and be paged out and have to leave, even if you are with your family.
The next thing I am going to talk about is career firefighters. The first thing about career firefighters is that you need to have a lot of commitment because they stay at the department overnight and multiple days at a time. Unlike volunteer firefighters, career firefighters have to go on call no matter what, even if they are sleeping. You do anything to get on the truck. The last thing about career firefighters is that they are found in a lot bigger communities. It is a lot easier for smaller communities to have volunteers because it is the most affordable and some are too small to need a career department.
The last thing I am going to talk about is living with a firefighter. The first thing about them is that they miss a lot, since they have to be at the department days at a time. So they miss a lot of you growing up. But when they come back home, it’s the greatest thing ever. Another thing is that firefighting is very dangerous, so it’s scary watching them leave home to go on duty and being afraid something like that might happen. The last thing I am going to talk about is a very important topic to me. What I am going to talk about is how proud I am that my dad and brother serve because a lot of people don’t appreciate firefighters but they do a lot for your community and risk their lives every day just so that you are safe. So next time you see a firefighter, thank them for what they have done for your community.
Even though we may not get to see our families when they go on duty, they always have a second family in the station. I appreciate my dad for what he has accomplished and the long journey through it.
