“No hour of life is wasted on a saddle…” Winston Churchill. I love this quote because I completely agree with it. I feel the same way. When I’m in the saddle, that’s when I feel happiest! Saddle pads are important to make the horse feel more comfortable. Today we are going to talk about saddle pads, from not the best to the best ones.
In 4th we have Classic Equine Zone™ Felt/Fleece Pad. This saddle pad only comes in black. They have 2 sizes, 30×30 and 31×32. So depending on what size your horse is, that’s the one I would choose. Pros: This saddle pad is recommended for horses with sensitive backs because it doesn’t hit pressure points in the horses back. Cons: This saddle pad is pretty expensive ranging from $369.99 to $379.99 which is quite expensive for a saddle pad.
In 3rd we have Relentless by Cactus Extreme Gel Pad. They have 3 colors: black, tan, and gray. My personal favorite is the black. They have 2 thicknesses ¾ and 1 but only one size is 31×30. Pros: It is super soft and breathable because it is lined with 100% Merino wool fleece. Cons: It may be difficult to keep the bottom clean over time.
In 2nd is SaddleRight Western Orthopedic Pad. They have 6 colors, but some of them have a combination of colors. They have a plain brown, tan and black, red and blue, and darkish brown. Then they have one with gray-black, a pretty light gray, and also a dark gray with a pretty dark brown. They have thicknesses of the pad from 5/8 to ¾. Pros: These pads are known to last 20 to 30+ years with proper care. Many people have reported that the pad is good as new even after decades. Cons: It is pretty heavy for a saddle pad weighing up to 1lb.
In first, we have Star Equine “The Barrel Racer” Wool Pad. This is a very impressive saddle pad. Their website has a bunch of unique saddle pads, so there is one for everybody! But I’m looking at the all-around pad which comes with a design or you can choose from wool colors which are Natural, black, dark chocolate, or, my personal favorite, pink two-toned. They have thicknesses from 1/2″ to 1-⅛. Pros: The wool that they used to make the saddle pad takes up 20 times its weight to cool the horse during more intense work. Cons: If it is not stored right it may cause creasing.
No matter which saddle pad, you should choose it depending on the way your horse feels and what makes them the happiest. Some are a bit pricey or they are heavy but it’s worth it to see your horse feel and look happier. Tune in next time for more about horses, keep riding!
